Toric Contact Lenses for Astigmatism

contact_lenses_for_astigmatismFor a number of years after their introduction contact lenses were able to with no trouble correct nearsightedness or farsightedness, but nothing else. Adjusting the point at which light rays focus is a fairly simple task, though it does require accurate crafting of the lens. But correcting particular forms of astigmatism still required wearing glasses. Toric contact lenses offer a solution to that problem and are the ideal contact lenses for astigmatism.

Nearsightedness causes light rays to focus in front of the retina. Farsightedness causes light rays to meet behind the retina. But, astigmatism indicates a condition in which the cornea, lens or the eyeball as a whole is misshapen. The effect is slight, but tiny differences in the eye create a large effect. Light rays get scattered in various directions, not solely ahead of or behind the retina. Blurred or hazy vision is the result.

That multiple direction effect makes it more challenging to produce contact lenses (or even glasses) that will correct the condition. Toric lenses solve the issue by combining shapes. Standard contacts are shaped like a part of a sphere. Toric lenses bring together a spherical surface with a toroidal surface. A donut is a good example of a toroid, so is a cylinder when it wraps around to touch itself.

Though designed differently, toric lenses are constructed of the same materials as other contact lens types. Which means they are available as soft, RGP or hard lenses. But because they are a mixture of shapes they can’t be allowed to rotate around the eye like standard contacts. Also, all toric lenses are designed with multiple capabilities to solve more than one vision challenge at the same time, such as astigmatism and farsightedness simultaneously. Those characteristics make them more difficult to manufacture accurately and eye exams and fitting are more complex.

As a result, toric lenses are likely to be more costly and so are optician visits to prescribe them. Those of you who only experience a mild astigmatism can forgo the expense of Toric Lenses and opt for standard contact lenses.  To an extent, the cornea will be predisposed to take to the shape of the lens. If the astigmatism is mild enough toric lenses may not be essential. Only a trained optician can provide a proper diagnosis after a thorough examination

For those who do require toric lenses, the full range of choices is available and they work very well. Often, those with an astigmatism need contacts that achieve multiple goals. You might consider multifocal lenses as an option. Toric lenses are offered in disposable lens types, whether 2-day or 7-day or even 30-day. Numerous extended wear lenses come in a toric option, as well.

If you want to add a splash of color to your contact lens, there are available toric styles providing multi color choicest. Visibility tints make lenses easier to see, making them easier to handle and harder to lose. Enhanced or full color tints can subtly influence eye color or change it entirely. You can find a wide range of interesting colored toric lenses for this too.

The Get Your Lenses online shop contains a good selection of toric contact lenses for astigmatism, and you should find the product that fits your needs.
